October 2000
An Update from Southern Thailand
Karl Klemmick

Hey Sheryl,

I don't actually have everyone's address, so I'll just start with you right now and tell you that I'm alive and well. Maybe you can pass it on to the rest of the family.

I just arrived today on the island of Ko Phi Phi in southern Thailand. This is supposedly where they filmed most of "The Beach." I didn't come here because of that - it just looked really cool. In reality, it is quite crowded with tourists and very developed, but the food is good and there are a lot of cute girls in bikinis, so it's not too bad. I'm going to take a boat tour tomorrow (weather depending) to do a bit of snorkeling, and explore the bays and cliffs on a few of the Islands around this area.

But to back up a bit... I made it all the way through Northern Sumatra on the motorcycle without killing myself, and sold it in Medan about a week and a half ago. I wanted to take it all the way to Bangkok, but the cost to bring it across the border was restrictive.

I'm still planning to be home for Thanksgiving, and I'm really looking forward to dropping in and seeing y'all again. If you have a chance, please give me a bit of news from home. I've been a bit out of touch.

Thanks and good to hear from you.
